Position Overview
Medusa Analytical is seeking a part-time, contract Forensic Scientist to support our team through Preliminary Discovery Checks—a critical first step in evaluating the scientific integrity of evidence in legal cases, typically working to review the State’s evidence on behalf of the client’s defense team.
This role is ideal for a detail-oriented scientist with a strong foundation in forensic analysis who is passionate about applying science to real-world legal challenges. The position is flexible and remote, with work assigned on a per-case basis.
Key Responsibilities
• Conduct Preliminary Discovery Checks on forensic case materials
• Review laboratory reports and raw analytical data
• Evaluate QA/QC documentation, calibration, and maintenance logs
• Review chain of custody records and SOPs
• Assess compliance with scientific and accreditation standards
• Identify errors, inconsistencies, or departures from best practices
• Prepare clear written summaries for attorneys
• Collaborate with internal team members as needed
Preferred Qualifications
• Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Analytical Chemistry, Forensic Science, Toxicology, or related field. Extensive work experience in an accredited laboratory may substitute for an advanced degree.
Courtroom testimony experience is a bonus.
• Experience in forensic toxicology, controlled substances.
• Familiarity with ISO 17025, ANAB, and forensic lab workflows
• Experience with GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, or similar instrumentation
• Strong technical writing and data interpretation skills
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
