About the position The Fisheries Biologist position at the State of Michigan involves managing fisheries and aquatic resources within the Lake Superior Management Unit. The role includes planning and implementing fisheries management plans, conducting aquatic surveys, and collaborating with various stakeholders to enhance and protect aquatic habitats. The position is available at different levels (9-12) based on experience, with increasing responsibilities and oversight of fisheries management programs. Responsibilities • Assist the Unit Manager in managing fisheries and aquatic resources. • Plan, promote, and implement fisheries management plans. • Conduct aquatic surveys and report findings. • Perform environmental permit reviews. • Participate in fish production and fisheries management operations. • Coordinate with other personnel and agencies for habitat protection and restoration activities. • Act as the primary author for river assessment reports and develop watershed assessments. • Collaborate with various stakeholders to promote the mission of the Division. Requirements • Possession of a bachelor's degree in fisheries biology, fisheries management, aquatic biology, or zoology. • Fisheries Biologist 9: No specific experience required. • Fisheries Biologist 10: One year of professional experience equivalent to a Fisheries Biologist 9. • Fisheries Biologist P11: Two years of professional experience equivalent to a Fisheries Biologist, including one year equivalent to a Fisheries Biologist 10. • Fisheries Biologist 12: Three years of professional experience equivalent to a Fisheries Biologist, including one year equivalent to a Fisheries Biologist P11. Nice-to-haves • Experience with geographic information systems (GIS). • Knowledge of statistical analysis software such as R or SAS. • Experience in public communication regarding fisheries issues.
