Competitive Salary and Benefits:
The salary for new law enforcement Border Patrol Agents ranges from:
- Base Salary: $63,148 - $120,145 annually
- Locality Pay: Varies by duty location
- Overtime Pay: Up to 25%
As a career ladder position, you will have opportunities for promotion from GL-9 to GS-11 to GS-12 after completing 52 weeks in the current grade. Border Patrol Agents enjoy various federal benefits, including health and insurance plans, a generous leave program, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan.
Incentives:
New agents can receive:
- Recruitment Incentive: Up to $20,000, with $10,000 upon completing the Border Patrol Academy and the remainder for accepting a prioritized location.
- Retention Incentive: Up to $40,000 distributed over four years.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Your role as a Border Patrol Agent is vital in protecting the American populace. Your typical duties may include:
- Monitoring and questioning individuals suspected of immigration and customs violations.
- Preventing and apprehending illegal aliens and smugglers through surveillance and various patrol techniques.
- Conducting checks on transportation and urban areas while utilizing multiple law enforcement assets.
- Patrolling national boundaries using vehicles and other transport means.
Qualifications:
To qualify for the GL-9 level, candidates should possess:
- One year of specialized law enforcement experience, including conducting searches and apprehending violators.
- Skills in firearms use, investigative report preparation, and evidence collection.
To qualify for the GS-11 level, candidates need:
- One year of specialized experience in law enforcement with responsibilities including investigating criminal activity and utilizing advanced technology for surveillance.
- Experience leading investigations and apprehending violators effectively.
There are no educational substitutions for GL-9 or GS-11 grade levels.
Additional Requirements:
- Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship is required.
- Residency: Must have primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
- Age: Candidates must be referred for selection before their 40th birthday unless exceptions apply.
- Formal Training: Successful candidates will undergo approximately six months of intensive training at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy.
