About the Role: Engineer - Big Data As a Big Data Engineer at American Express, you will be part of a dynamic and agile team that leverages the latest technologies, including Hadoop, Big Data, Data Science, and Machine Learning, to develop innovative solutions across multiple lines of business. You will work closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to identify business needs, design and develop software applications, and deliver high-quality solutions that meet our customers' evolving needs. Key Responsibilities Software Development: Design, develop, test, and maintain software applications using programming languages such as Java, Python, and Scala. Agile Methodologies: Contribute to agile teams by participating in coding, code reviews, and automated testing to ensure high-quality software delivery. Troubleshooting and Debugging: Identify and resolve technical issues, and collaborate with teams to improve overall system quality and reliability. Deployment and Monitoring: Enable the deployment, support, and monitoring of software applications across test, integration, and production environments. Automation and Scalability: Automate solutions in test or production environments and scale applications based on demand projections. Leadership and Collaboration: Lead small teams of engineers, influence peers with innovative ideas, and drive continuous improvement. Essential Qualifications and Skills To succeed in this role, you will need: A Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. 3+ years of experience in software development, leading teams of engineers, and working with agile methodologies. Strong experience with Hadoop, Hive, Spark (core, SQL, and PySpark), and distributed environments. Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, Python, or Scala. Experience with data warehousing concepts, financial reporting environments, and UNIX shell scripting. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to design and develop complex data pipelines. Preferred Qualifications Additionally, having the following skills and experience will be a plus: Knowledge of cloud platforms such as GCP or AWS, and experience with building microservices and scalable solutions. Experience with designing and building solutions using Kafka streams or queues. Familiarity with GitHub/Bitbucket, CI/CD pipelines, and NoSQL databases such as HBase, Couchbase, or MongoDB. Excellent technical and analytical skills, with strong communication and project management abilities.
