About the position

The CDC Foundation seeks a full-time Epidemiologist to support epidemiologic and surveillance activities to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality in Tanzania, Malawi and Nigeria. The Epidemiologist will serve as part of a research team which conducts assessments to determine baseline and changes in the availability, access and quality of maternal health services in Tanzania, Malawi and Nigeria. The Epidemiologist will participate in field activities in Tanzania, Malawi and Nigeria as well as serve as a participant and lead components of program monitoring and evaluation design, methods and analysis. The Epidemiologist position is an interdisciplinary role that brings together strong technical and analytical skills, with knowledge of public health. The combined skills and experience are essential to ensure the strategic objectives of the project are met.

Responsibilities
β€’ Conduct and may lead data analyses to improve understanding of, characteristics of and prevention opportunities to improve maternal health services in low-resource settings.
β€’ Provide thought leadership to emerging international approaches to understand contributors to disparate maternal health outcomes among populations.
β€’ May train, provide guidance to, or review the work of junior-level colleagues.
β€’ Support and oversee the development of standard operating procedures and data management tools to organize data collection and monitor field staff.
β€’ Reviews literature to maintain current knowledge about measuring and evaluating maternal health capacity and performance at each level of the health system.
β€’ Lead or support the development of comprehensive reports, manuscripts, abstracts, posters and/or presentations that include findings from the analysis of the project activities.
β€’ Lead or support field activities to conduct data collection at health facilities in low-resource settings such as Tanzania, Malawi and Nigeria.
β€’ Provide programmatic support for evaluation activities, including participation in planning, questionnaire design, data entry, data collection field visit planning and staff training.
β€’ Participate in special projects and other duties as assigned.

Requirements
β€’ Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with a background in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health or closely related disciplines is required.
β€’ Minimum of 7 years of related professional experience required with direct experience in data analysis OR 5 years of related professional experience with a PhD required.
β€’ Advanced proficiency in data management and analysis using SAS
β€’ Experience in the design and execution of epidemiologic research, including advanced statistical analysis and in publishing research results.
β€’ Demonstrates a high degree of initiative and flexibility to adapt to shifting priorities, able to communicate effectively in a positive and professional manner and able to prioritize activities when under tight deadlines.
β€’ Excellent written and verbal communication skills with experience preparing, writing and editing complex documents such as detailed reports and peer-reviewed articles.
β€’ Sound judgment and maturity exemplified by consistent professionalism in dealing with individuals at all levels both internally and externally.
β€’ Ability to travel internationally 30–40% of the time, at times on short notice, with varied cadence, and an average trip duration of 3–4 weeks.
