Objective
Develop engaging, research-backed YouTube scripts on environmental topics that translate complex scientific concepts into accessible, entertaining content for a millennial and Gen Z audience.
Profile Overview
Our client is seeking a writer with a strong foundation in science communication and storytelling to support a growing YouTube brand focused on environmental topics. The ideal candidate can synthesize technical research into clear, compelling narratives while maintaining audience engagement and retention.
Experience with YouTube scripting, digital storytelling, and audience engagement strategies is highly preferred.
Scope
• Approx. 20 hours per week
• Ongoing engagement with an initial commitment of 6 months
• 2–4 scripts per month
• Typical turnaround: 10–14 days per script
Responsibilities
• Conduct in-depth research on environmental and scientific topics, including reviewing academic papers and technical sources
• Translate complex scientific findings into digestible, engaging content for a general audience
• Write long-form YouTube scripts (~3,000–4,000 words) optimized for viewer retention
• Incorporate storytelling techniques to maintain engagement (“writing for retention”)
• Collaborate with the client to refine scripts and incorporate feedback
• Adapt tone to include light humor or engaging elements where appropriate
• Stay current with internet culture and trends to ensure relevance for target audiences
• Work with SMEs or other collaborators when needed
Skills and Qualifications
• Proven experience in science communication, environmental writing, or related fields
• Strong research skills with the ability to interpret and simplify technical material
• Experience writing for YouTube or other video platforms preferred
• Understanding of audience retention strategies and digital storytelling
• Ability to write for millennial and Gen Z audiences (“digitally native” voice)
• Strong communication and collaboration skills
• Background in environmental science or a related field (preferred but not required)
• Familiarity with internet culture and trends
