Engineer - Medical/Laboratory Equipment

The role involves managing engineering safety investigations for various medical and laboratory products, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and providing technical assistance to clients.ResponsibilitiesDetermines project scope, develops a preliminary plan of investigation, and determines project specifications such as cost, time, and sample requirements by analyzing client input, available supplemental data, and product construction, including mechanical drawings and electrical schematics. Projects may include travel to conduct or witness tests at client sitesInitiates communication with clients to promote and explain the benefits of new and existing services. Follows up on contacts from clients. Communicates with clients to discuss technical issues, explain UL procedures and requirements, convey project cost, and negotiate completion date and sample requirements. Acts to address client concerns and to resolve client issuesProvides technical assistance to clients in reference to product inspection and follow-up servicesEstablishes appropriate test programs by reviewing files and manufacturer's information, examining samples, and applying UL requirementsIs familiar with applicable standards, including IEC 60601-1, ISO 14971, IEC 61010-1, and IEC 62368-1Examines samples for compliance with UL requirements and notifies client of any areas in which the product is not in compliance or of any changes in project scope or specificationsCoordinates laboratory activities by preparing data sheets and instructions to technicians, scheduling and reviewing work of laboratory technicians and engineering support staff, establishing completion dates, and often conducting the testingCoordinates administrative aspects of project management. May serve as Project Handler of record and/or Reviewer of record as assignedCommunicates project status and results to clients through frequent contact and by preparing reportsPrepares Follow-Up Service Procedures and information pagesIntegrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the jobResolves engineering issues associated with Variation Notices by analyzing and reporting on the acceptability of the variationsAssists in the development of UL requirementsAssists in developing special test methods and test equipmentAnalyzes test program for adequacy and sequenceMay coordinate and/or perform File Reviews, as directedMay represent UL at industry related functions such as seminars and trade showsReads and follows the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and follows all physical and digital security practicesPerforms other duties as directedSkillsBachelor's degree in Electrical or Biomedical Engineering with Electrical focus, or related field from an ABET accredited program1-3 years directly related experience preferred but not requiredKnowledge of IEC 60101-1 and/or IEC 61010-1 preferredShows initiative and resourcefulnessStrong communication skills and ability to interact and connect with customersProven ability to be innovative and creativeDesire to work within a team environmentComfortable in laboratory environments performing hands-on engineeringExcellent interpersonal skillsAble to provide unique solutions to complex problemsBenefitsAnnual bonus compensation with a target payout of 5% of the base salaryHealth benefits such as medical, dental and visionWellness benefits such as mental and financial healthRetirement savings (401K)Paid time off including vacation (15 days)Holiday including floating holidays (12 days)Sick time off (72 hours)Company OverviewUL Solutions is a safety science company that promotes safety science through research and investigation.
