Job Summary We have an exciting opportunity for an English Language Arts (ELA) Tutor to provide academic support to students from grades 2-12. Under the direction of the Education Director, tutors spend the majority of their time providing individual or small-group tutoring. Additional time may be spent leading Reading or Writing Clubs, working with reading students and test prep for ELA exams. Tutors are responsible for planning their own lessons and finding materials, but the Education Director will support them strongly so that all lessons work toward strong student outcomes. The position varies, as student's needs change. This is a good fit for an experienced, eager tutor or teacher who is adaptable and excited to become an integral part of the Boys' Club. Responsibilities • Create and provide literacy and writing-based lesson plans for tutoring sessions. • Provide tutoring or manage a group of up to four boys during tutoring sessions. • Provide academic support in English/Language arts, especially writing for students in grades 2-12. • Observe and track member's progress and attendance, through logs, diagnostics, incentive systems, etc. • Reinforce positive student behavior and clubhouse rules; maintain a positive relationship with all members, families and staff. • Write, implement and adapt a curriculum and training methods that meets participants' interests. • Prepare class materials, curriculum, and bulletin displays, and make copies as needed. • Attends required department meetings and training sessions. Qualifications • Bachelor's Degree with a focus in English, Education, literacy, and/or other highly relevant field is preferred • At least 2 years of experience as a reading/ English/ writing tutor or classroom teacher • Comfort with students and ELA subject content from early literacy through upper high school level • Strong knowledge of best practices with prewriting, composition and grammar skills • Teacher certification or formal education experience strongly preferred • Knowledge of NYC school standards a plus • Strong communication and organizational skills • Ability to adapt to a changing environment and to address the varying needs of the boys in our program • Experience working with children is necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Design, Problem Solving, Planning and Organizing, Leadership, Teamwork, Written and Verbal Communication What We Offer • PTO: Sick time only The Boys' Club of New York is an equal opportunity employer and makes employment decisions without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, protected veteran status, disability status, or any other status protected by law.
