Director of Communications

Reports To: Vice President, External Affairs Supervises: N/A Classification: Full-time Start Date: May 18, 2026 Location: Remote ______________________________________________________________________________ Position Purpose The Director of Communications is responsible for executing America’s Promise Alliance’s day-to-day communications work and managing the systems, processes, and tools that support it. This role ensures that APA’s website, social media, and external materials are accurate, up to date, and aligned with APA’s established messaging and brand. Reporting to the Vice President of External Affairs, the Director focuses on implementation, production, and coordination. This includes managing digital channels, producing high-quality materials, maintaining templates and brand standards, and ensuring communications workflows are organized, efficient, and consistently followed across teams. Responsibilities Website and Digital Channels Maintain APA’s website with regular updates, including posting content, updating pages, and ensuring information is current and accurate . Independently update website content using platforms such as Squarespace (or similar CMS), including creating new pages, editing layouts, uploading assets, and troubleshooting basic issues. Manage APA’s social media accounts by posting content, resharing member updates, and maintaining a consistent presence. Execute updates tied to convenings, announcements, and organizational activities. Upload and format multimedia content (including graphics and images) across website and social platforms. Monitor basic engagement metrics and flag trends or issues to the VP of External Affairs. Design Production, Templates, and Brand Implementation Produce high-quality materials, including decks, briefs, one-pagers, social graphics, and other external-facing content. Maintain and update templates that staff use to create materials. Ensure all materials follow APA’s brand guidelines and formatting standards. Review materials developed by staff to ensure consistency with brand and quality expectations. Support staff in using templates and design tools correctly. Communications Systems, Operations, and Project Management Maintain organized file structures, asset libraries, photo archives, and shared folders. Manage communications workflows in Asana, including tracking requests, assigning tasks, and maintaining timelines. Ensure all communications requests follow established processes and are documented appropriately. Maintain version control across materials and ensure teams are using the most current versions. Provide regular updates to stakeholders on project status and timelines. Coordinate across teams to ensure communications work is completed efficiently and in the correct sequence. Experience & Competencies 5–8 years of experience in communications, design, digital content, or related fields. Strong ability to execute and produce high-quality materials quickly and accurately. Experience managing and updating websites using platforms such as Squarespace or similar CMS tools (required). Experience managing social media platforms and executing content updates. Experience using design tools (e.g., Canva, PowerPoint) to create polished materials. Basic video editing skills (e.g., editing short-form content, adding captions) are a plus but not required. Experience managing workflows and project management tools (e.g., Asana). Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines at once. Clear and consistent application of brand and formatting standards. Strong follow-through and ability to complete work with minimal oversight. Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with clear direction. Commitment to APA’s mission and supporting the work of member organizations. Accountability Website and Digital Channels: Responsible for maintaining accurate , timely updates to APA’s website and social media platforms so content is current and reflective of organizational activities. Brand Implementation and Consistency: Responsible for applying APA’s brand, voice, and visual standards consistently across all materials and supporting staff in doing the same. Design Production: Responsible for producing high-quality materials, including decks, briefs, one-pagers, and templates, for internal and external use. Communications Systems and Operations: Responsible for maintaining organized communications systems, including file structures, templates, asset libraries, and workflows, ensuring staff can easily access and use materials. Project Management and Coordination: Responsible for managing communications projects, tracking requests, and ensuring work is completed on time and aligned to established priorities . What success looks like in this role: Success in this role means delivering high-quality work quickly and consistently, while managing multiple projects at once and handling a high volume of design and content requests. This person is comfortable using a range of tools and can quickly learn new systems and implement them without heavy oversight. They bring strong project management, keep work organized and moving, and help teams get clear on what they need. As a result, communications work is timely, consistent, and aligned to APA’s priorities, with systems and processes that make execution easier across the organization. Location, Compensation, & Benefits APA is searching for the best talent regardless of location, as such please note that APA’s team is largely remote and location is flexible within the United States. Salary and benefits will be competitive and commensurate with experience with a range of $79,000 - $118,000. Some travel is required for this role.
