Job Overview As a Special Education Teacher Assistant 1:1 (EVA), you will play a vital role in supporting students with disabilities, aged 3-21, in achieving their academic, behavioral, social, and functional goals. Under the guidance of a licensed special education teacher, you will assist in implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs), modeling necessary skills, and providing specialized care and support to students with diverse needs. Key Responsibilities Assist students with disabilities in academic, behavioral, social, and functional growth and development Maintain confidentiality regarding all aspects of work with students with disabilities and other staff Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials to meet the diverse needs of students Implement instructional programs and lesson plans, such as reading, math, language comprehension, writing, and computer skills Promote independence of students with disabilities and encourage self-advocacy Document students' daily activities, including behavior, completed assignments, and on/off task times Monitor individual and/or groups of students with disabilities in various settings, ensuring a safe and positive learning environment Provide specialized handling or care of students, such as toileting, diapering, and feeding Communicate and collaborate with teachers and other relevant personnel to evaluate student progress and implement IEP objectives Maintain classroom equipment and work area, ensuring a safe and clean learning environment Participate in meetings, professional development activities, and other events as assigned by the building or district administrator Essential Qualifications To be considered for this role, you must possess: A valid Illinois Educator License with Stipulations - Paraprofessional or Professional Educator License or Substitute Teacher License Appropriate verbal and written language skills Ability to follow verbal and written instructions Effective interpersonal skills Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job Ability to use basic job-related equipment Ability to understand students' disabilities and apply this understanding to the responsibilities of the job Ability to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and assist in lifting up to 50 lbs Preferred Qualifications While not essential, the following qualifications are highly desirable: Experience working with students with special needs Knowledge of special education principles, practices, and procedures Familiarity with IEPs and their implementation Ability to adapt to changing situations and priorities Strong organizational and time management skills Skills and Competencies To succeed in this role, you will need to demonstrate: Empathy and understanding of students with diverse needs and abilities Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Ability to work effectively in a team environment Flexibility and adaptability in responding to changing situations and priorities Strong organizational and time management skills Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion Career Growth Opportunities and Learning Benefits At Oswego Community Unit School District 308, we are committed to supporting the professional growth and development of our staff.
