ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY Avoya Travel is hiring a Database Administrator (PostgreSQL DBA) to manage, optimize, and secure our Azure‑managed PostgreSQL environment. This role supports the performance and reliability of our travel technology platform, leads database architecture improvements, and plays a key role in migrating legacy systems to a modern, cloud‑based infrastructure. You’ll partner closely with Product, Engineering, and IT to deliver scalable, high‑availability solutions that drive business growth. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Administer and maintain Azure-managed PostgreSQL database instances across development, staging, and production environments Design and implement scalable, high-performance database architectures aligned with business needs Monitor database performance and apply tuning strategies to optimize query execution Develop, maintain, and test backup and disaster recovery procedures Implement and enforce database security policies, access controls, and compliance requirements Write, optimize, and maintain complex SQL queries, stored procedures, functions, and triggers Implement and tune indexes and other performance-critical optimizations Support data privacy compliance initiatives and data access requests Plan and execute database migrations, upgrades, and patches with minimal downtime Collaborate with development teams to review database designs and optimize application queries Create and maintain comprehensive database documentation, including ER diagrams and data dictionaries Troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues in a timely manner Automate routine DBA tasks using PowerShell, SQL, or other scripting tools Participate in an on-call rotation to support critical database systems Assist with other tasks and/or special projects as required. REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES Advanced SQL programming and query optimization skills Strong experience with high-availability and disaster recovery solutions Proficiency in performance tuning, indexing strategies, and execution plan analysis Solid understanding of database security, encryption, and compliance best practices Experience migrating data from Microsoft SQL Server to PostgreSQL Familiarity with database monitoring and performance management tools Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills Excellent written and verbal communication skills Able to collaborate effectively with other employees and managers to ensure teamwork. Ability to handle situations in a calm, professional manner and exhibit good judgment. Presents a professional and tidy appearance (virtually or in person) while participating in virtual calls, company or industry events, and/or meetings. Ability to maintain productivity and confidentiality in a remote or hybrid work environment, including: Minimal distractions Reliable internet connectivity Ongoing communication with leadership Reliable childcare/eldercare when applicable EXPERIENCE AND/OR EDUCATION A minimum of five (5) years of experience as a Database Administrator with strong PostgreSQL expertise Experience managing PostgreSQL in a public cloud environment (Azure preferred) PREFERRED Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent experience preferred. Relevant certifications (e.g., Certified PostgreSQL DBA – CPSDBA) Experience with additional cloud and on-premise databases (Azure SQL, AWS RDS, Microsoft SQL Server) Knowledge of data warehousing concepts and ETL processes Experience with database DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines Familiarity with NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Redis) Experience with Redgate or similar database tools Exposure to the travel or e-commerce industry Understanding data governance and master data management Experience with database automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to work a varied schedule as needed to support department needs and deadlines. If remote, ability to receive and setup company laptop, 15” monitor, keyboard, headset, and mouse (all less than 5-lbs each). Ability to perform the essential duties of the role, which are primarily computer‑based and involve extended periods of sitting, typing, reading, reviewing, and writing. Ability to speak English clearly, in a friendly manner, and at an appropriate volume over the company’s provided phone system, Microsoft Teams, or in person as needed.
