Data Administrator Engineer (Remote Position)

The Data Administrator/Engineer is responsible for the design, administration, optimization, and engineering of enterprise database systems that support clinical, operational, and analytical functions across the organization. This role blends traditional DBA responsibilities with modern data engineering practices, including pipeline development, data modeling, and workflow automation. The ideal candidate brings deep experience with healthcare data environments, particularly Epic Clarity—along with strong SQL development, data warehousing, and data integration expertise. The Data Administrator/Engineer will collaborate closely with reporting, analytics, application, and infrastructure teams to ensure data integrity, performance, availability, and scalability across the enterprise; and other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Manages and supports production, test, and development database environments, ensuring stability, performance, and security.
Administers data warehouses populated from Epic Clarity and AthenaIDX databases, including performance tuning, data extraction, and schema management.
Implements and monitors database security controls, backup and recovery processes, and disaster recovery procedures.
Troubleshoots database issues, conduct root‑cause analysis, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
Supports system upgrades, patches, and enhancements in collaboration with application and infrastructure teams.
Ensures compliance with HIPAA and organizational data governance and security standards.
Designs, builds, and maintains scalable ETL/ELT pipelines that integrate data from Epic Clarity, AthenaIDX, and other clinical/operational systems.
Develops automated workflows and orchestration processes using tools such as SSIS, Informatica, Azure Data Factory, or equivalent platforms.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

5+ years of experience as a Database Administrator or Data Engineer in an enterprise environment
Direct experience with Epic’s Clarity database structures and administration
Strong background in data warehousing, including schema design, ETL/ELT development, and performance optimization
5+ years of SQL programming experience (T SQL, PL/SQL, or equivalent)
Experience developing and maintaining automated data pipelines using enterprise or cloud based integration tools
3+ years supporting data reporting and analysis functions
2+ years of healthcare industry experience, preferably within a provider or clinical systems environment
Proficiency with enterprise RDBMS platforms such as SQL Server or Oracle
Experience with scripting languages (Python, PowerShell) for automation and data processing
Strong understanding of database security, auditing, and compliance requirements
Familiarity with version control (Git) and CI/CD practices for data workflows
Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non technical stakeholders
Direct experience with AthenaIDX database structures and administration
Experience with Epic Caboodle or other healthcare data models.
Familiarity with cloud database and data engineering platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP)
Experience with BI/reporting tools (Power BI, Tableau, Crystal Reports)
Knowledge of HL7, FHIR, or other interoperability standards
Experience with data governance and metadata management tools (e.g., Collibra, Purview).

Total RewardsThe referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of University of Maryland’s Faculty Physician’s Inc. salary range for this position. Some candidates will not be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, internal equity, responsibility factor and span of control, education/training and other qualifications.
