Customs & Import Compliance Counsel – Technology Sector

Job Description: We are seeking an experienced Customs / Import Contract Attorney to support a leading global technology company’s Trade Legal team for a 12+ month engagement . This role focuses on U.S. import and customs compliance counseling , advising on tariff classification, country-of-origin determinations, and engagement with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The ideal candidate brings deep subject-matter expertise in U.S. import laws, strong project management skills, and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally in a fast-paced, innovative environment.
Responsibilities
• Provide legal and strategic advice on compliance with U.S. and international customs and import laws
• Conduct HTS classifications, country-of-origin (COO) determinations (including marking requirements), and tariff impact assessments
• Advise on U.S. tariff regimes, including IEEPA, Sections 232 and 301
• Counsel on additional regulatory requirements applicable at import (e.g., FDA and other partner government agencies)
• Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to assess and mitigate import compliance risks related to products, infrastructure projects, vendors, and suppliers
• Assist with the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of global trade compliance policies, processes, and controls
• Support audits, investigations, and remediation efforts related to customs and import compliance
• Develop, review, and advise on global trade compliance provisions in commercial contracts
• Support special projects and other trade compliance initiatives as needed
Requirements
• Juris Doctor (JD) and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar (or foreign equivalent)
• 8+ years of overall legal experience
• 5+ years of experience advising on U.S. import laws, including HTS classification, COO determinations, labeling requirements, and regulatory inquiries
• Experience drafting and negotiating global trade compliance provisions
• Experience managing or coordinating with outside counsel
• Strong legal judgment, analytical skills, and ability to provide practical, business-oriented advice
Nice-to-haves
• In-house or advisory experience supporting technology, telecommunications, consumer electronics, or large-scale infrastructure projects
• Experience advising on international customs and import laws
• Familiarity with FDA requirements for medical device or laser imports
• Experience with partner government agency (PGA) regulations
• Experience with U.S. and international export controls and sanctions regimes
