Clinical Coding Specialist
POSITION SUMMARY The Clinical Coding Specialist performs the function of coding and abstracting, as well as carrying out the department’s goals and objectives of providing & maintaining comprehensive, accurate and complete health records. The Clinical Coding Specialist is responsible for the coding and classification of all diseases and interventions for inpatient and outpatient encounters, in accordance with CIHI standards and MOHLTC requirements. Other appropriate duties may be assigned as required.QUALIFICATIONS Employee must be certified with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA), in good standingExpert knowledge of ICD-10-CA/CCI coding practices and policiesComprehensive knowledge of pathophysiology, biomedical sciences, information sciences and technology and integration of clinical and financial informationMS office suite of products including Excel, Word, Power Point and AccessExperience with coding and abstracting applications (3M experience preferred)Experience, both technical and functional, in Healthcare Information Systems (EPIC, BORN, CCIS, WTIS, IDS, 3terra, etc.)Excellent working knowledge of CIHI Coding standards, CIHI DAD and NACRS Abstraction Manuals, RIW, HIG, CACS, and diagnoses typingKnowledgeable in Ontario Health policies and funding models, with acute attention to the relevance and reliance on the outcome of the coding and abstracting process in their applicationStrong communication skills are an asset to this positionPrior coding experience an asset, preferably in a large teaching hospitalAble to work in a team environmentConsideration given to previous work record and attendanceNote: Coding test will be administered as part of the interview process.
