Children and Youth Services Program Librarian

POSITION DETAILS: The Children and Youth Services Program Librarian is a full-time position that plans, develops, implements, and evaluates library programs and services for children and youth (ages birth to seventeen) in consultation with the library director. The children and youth services librarian is responsible for children’s and YA collection development. This position also contributes to outreach efforts including social media and the monthly newsletter.

REPORTS TO: Library Director

SALARY: $22-23/hour, dependent on experience

HOURS:

40 hours weekly with Tues-Sat hours set

11am-7pm Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday

9am-3pm Friday and Saturday

4 hours of either work from home or at the library any day of the week

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor’s degree and one to three years library or planning experience
• MLIS or VT library certification or willingness to pursue certification preferred
• Ability to manage varied sized groups of up to 100 community members
• Experience working with children and youth ages birth to seventeen
• Experience with graphic design; Canva preferred
• Experience with Makerspace tools including robotics, 3D printers, etc. is preferred

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Plans, organizes, leads, and supervises innovative and diverse library programs for children and youth, including workshops and displays both inside and outside the library setting, including virtual programming
• Plans and implements storytime each week
• Assists director with grant administration that pertains to children’s and youth services
• Plans activities and programs for future Makerspace (Makerspace is dependent on grant funding)
• Coordinates programs to work into library initiatives, departmental objectives, school initiatives, and community events
• Along with the library director, promotes public awareness of the library by building and maintaining relationships with preschools, elementary schools, middle and high schools
• Presents monthly reports to the library director in a timely manner
• Works directly with potential program presenters/performers and stays within budget limits
• Actively promotes library services, materials, and programs to patrons
• Assesses, buys and processes children and YA digital and physical materials in accordance with the budget and community interests. Must keep abreast of current children’s literature to ensure that collections are balanced and appropriate
• Provides assistance in the operations of the circulation desk including answering phones, assisting patrons with general questions and hold requests, and overall support to ensure patrons’ needs are met
• Assists with social media and development of monthly newsletter
• Assists with annual spring fundraiser
• Assists in training new staff and volunteers

• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work with library patrons and staff in a consistently friendly and efficient manner
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team as well as independently
• Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and decision-making skills
• Competency in using computers, office applications, and library-related software
• Ability to prioritize work activities
• Technical abilities pertaining to Makerspace activities
