Backend Engineer

Peatix is seeking a Back End Engineer to join our Community and Events team. You'll help create new spaces and avenues for users to connect, while building and maintaining tools that enable organizers to seamlessly create and manage events. An application engineer who can be productive quickly in a Perl monolith. A great communicator capable of working with a fully distributed team. Someone capable of working autonomously and asynchronously, comfortable with asking questions and pairing with other engineers to build context. We want you for the skills you want to hone as much as for the skills you bring to the table. You expect to be guided and supported rather than micromanaged. Responsibilities Write robust, maintainable Perl for Peatix.com and APIs to support our Vue.js front end and native apps. Develop an in-depth understanding of the Peatix code base allowing you to dive into, refactor, and improve the codebase. Execute improvements to the scalability and performance of the Peatix platform. Review code written by your team mates. Write documentation so that the systems you maintain and develop are understandable to the whole team. You’ll have the opportunity to work on other areas, based on interest and demand. Provide emergency support (service outages, etc.) by participating in our on-call rotation. Requirements (Must-Haves) You're a strong communicator who thrives in a fully distributed team environment You can empathize and work effectively with a diverse range of colleagues. You have a thorough understanding of modern web application development. You have experience creating, maintaining, and deploying multi-service applications in cloud platforms like AWS. You have experience designing and writing comprehensive tests. You enjoy designing and implementing APIs in existing codebases. You have experience working with Git and GitHub. You have experience working with relational databases, particularly MySQL. Desirable qualifications and skills: Desirable qualifications are really just nice to haves, and applicants should apply even if they don’t have them. You can communicate in conversational Japanese or above. You have experience with Perl and JavaScript. You have familiarity with distributed systems in production environments (job scheduling and scaling). Office Locations Peatix has offices in Tokyo, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and New York.
