About the position

This position is based in Ithaca, NY, within the ILR School on the campus of Cornell University. The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University is seeking a highly qualified Associate Director of Advising – Academic Advising Associate II to join the Office of Student Services. This role serves as one of three professional advisors reporting to the ILR School’s Director of Student Services. The Associate Director works collaboratively with the Director and the Student Services team to provide comprehensive academic advising and support ILR undergraduate student population. What you will do: As the Associate Director of Advising, you will be a vital member of the Student Services team. You will provide individualized assistance and referrals to ILR undergraduate students, supporting their academic progress, personal well‑being, and professional development. You will also help create an exceptional student experience for students from varied cultural, geographic, socioeconomic backgrounds, and lived experiences.

Responsibilities
• Provide comprehensive academic advising to ILR undergraduate students, guiding them through degree requirements, curriculum planning, academic performance, policies, and co-curricular opportunities.
• Support students navigating sensitive or complex situations and connect them with appropriate campus resources.
• Serve as the Office of Student Services advising liaison to Student Disability Services and ensure students receive appropriate referrals and accommodation support.
• Co-lead the ILR Peer Mentor Program, including recruitment, training, and oversight of approximately 30 mentors.
• Serve as the primary Staff Advisor to the ILR Student Government Association and support leadership across all ILR undergraduate student organizations.
• Provide advising, training, and organizational support for ILR student organizations in partnership with Campus Activities.
• Contribute as a member of the advising team to the coordination of major Student Services events, including new student orientation, commencement, and other school-wide programs.
• Develop and participate in programs and services that promote student success, engagement, and sense of community, partnering with campus colleagues when appropriate.
• Hire, train, and supervise student tutors, including working with faculty to identify qualified candidates.
• Participate in school-wide committees and assume other administrative responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree and 2 to 4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.
• Experience counseling/advising undergraduates in higher education.
• Demonstrated ability to advise and mentor students from diverse backgrounds in exploring and succeeding in higher education.
• Candidates for the position must demonstrate their ability to contribute to an evolving student experience team and be able to embrace change.
• Must possess an appreciation and understanding of a research university, and desire to work closely with students using proven student development theory/techniques.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with individuals at various levels of an academic environment including but not limited to: students, faculty, staff and alumni.
• Ability to cultivate and maintain relationships with key University administrators in complex campus structure.
• Demonstrated ability to be an effective team member.
• Demonstrated supervisory experience.
• Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and coordinate multiple projects, manage events and special assignments.
• Proven analytical skill in evaluating student employment applications.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively and work successfully under pressure with minimal supervision in a fast‑paced team environment.
• Collaborate with individuals across an academic community and cultivate welcoming, respectful working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and campus partners.
• Lead efforts for continuous improvement of student services and communication by collecting and analyzing data from interviews, surveys, and academic records regarding the needs, performance, and development of ILR students.
• Ability to co-supervise administrative staff and train staff and student employees on office procedures, protocol, and responsibilities.
• Demonstrate the ability to plan, develop, manage, implement, and monitor projects and events from conception to completion.

Nice-to-haves
• A master’s degree in student development, higher education leadership/student personnel, and experience is preferred.
• Experience with or knowledge of and management of peer mentoring programs and advising undergraduate student organizations a plus.
