Accounting Manager (Real Estate - Fully Remote)
Location: Fully Remote (Must live within DC MD VA area for occasional in-person meetings)
Compensation: $120,000β$130,000 base + ~10% bonus
Employment Type: Full-Time
Status: Contingent upon new business award
Position Overview
The Accounting Manager, reporting to the VP of Property Accounting, will oversee the financial operations for a portfolio of multifamily properties. This role manages a team of property accountants and serves as a key partner to operations, leadership, and external stakeholders to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting.
This is a fully remote position, however candidates must reside in the DC/Maryland/Virginia (DMV) area to support occasional office visits, audits, or team meetings.
Key Responsibilities
β’ Manage day-to-day accounting activities for a portfolio of approximately 10β20 properties
β’ Review and approve:
β’ Monthly financial statements
β’ Bank reconciliations
β’ Cash wires and funding activity
β’ Ensure all reporting deadlines are consistently met (month-end, quarter-end, year-end)
β’ Serve as a primary accounting contact for third-party stakeholders regarding:
β’ Financial statement questions
β’ Distributions
β’ Business license filings
β’ Personal property tax filings and other tax-related inquiries
β’ Oversee accounting transitions related to:
β’ New property onboardings
β’ Property dispositions or management transitions
β’ Preparation of sale prorations
β’ Partner closely with Operations on:
β’ Annual budgeting and reforecasting
β’ Cash funding draws
β’ Financial statement preparation and analysis
β’ Lead, mentor, and manage a team of property accountants, including:
β’ Training and development
β’ Performance management
β’ Goal setting and accountability
β’ Collaborate with senior accounting leadership on:
β’ Monthly close
β’ Year-end close
β’ Annual audit coordination
β’ Manage multiple deadlines across multiple property management systems
β’ Ensure accounting practices align with GAAP and industry standards
Qualifications
β’ 7+ years of experience in real estate or property accounting
β’ 5+ years in a people management or leadership role
β’ Strong background in affordable housing, multifamily or property management accounting
β’ Bachelorβs degree in Accounting or Finance required
β’ Strong working knowledge of GAAP
β’ Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, SUMIFs, etc.)
β’ Experience working with property management/accounting software
β’ Yardi experience preferred
β’ Excellent written and verbal communication skills
β’ Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
β’ Customer-service oriented mindset with strong stakeholder management skills
